Job Description

If you're seeking a role where your clinical expertise is truly valued—and where you can make a meaningful difference without the layers of complexity found in larger systems—Tōtara Hospice offers a refreshing alternative.

We are one of New Zealand’s largest and most respected autonomous hospices, proudly leading the way in specialist palliative care. Serving South and South-East Auckland, our model of care is grounded in compassion, cultural humility, and clinical excellence. While Tōtara Hospice is a registered charity, we view this as our tax status—not our business model. We operate with the strategic intent and operational rigour of a high-performing healthcare organisation. Although we receive partial Government funding, we actively pursue innovative and sustainable revenue-generation initiatives to supplement the generous contributions from our community. This enables us to maintain our independence, invest in service excellence, and continue delivering care of the highest standard. Whether you're looking for more connection, more purpose, or simply a different pace, this could be the opportunity to realign your career with your values.

Te Mahi | The Role

In this role, you’ll be part of a highly skilled, tight-knit multidisciplinary team delivering holistic care across our Inpatient Unit (IPU) and community settings. Our approach is grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā, ensuring we care for the whole person—physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Providing expert clinical care with a focus on pain and symptom management.
  • Collaborating with our MDT to develop and implement personalised care plans.
  • Maintaining high standards of documentation and clinical governance using MedTech.
  • Applying evidence-based, culturally safe practices in all aspects of care.
  • Working within our flexible, values-driven framework

This is a permanent role (0.8–1.0 FTE, 32–40 hours/week), reporting to the Medical Lead and participating in a shared on-call roster.

Ngā pūkenga e hiahiatia | What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a doctor who’s not just clinically excellent, but also ready for a change—someone who values autonomy, collaboration, and purpose.

You’ll bring:

  • Current registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • At least 5 years’ clinical experience in hospital or general practice settings.
  • Experience providing care for people with long term chronic conditions and advanced cancer.
  • A strong interest or background in palliative care, general practice, geriatrics, or internal medicine.
  • A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills.
  • An open mind that is willing to learn specialist palliative care skills.
  • A full, clean NZ driver’s licence (pool vehicles provided).

Why Choose Tōtara Hospice?

  • We’re not just another healthcare provider—we’re a community. Here’s what sets us apart:
  • A bespoke orientation programme tailored to your needs.
  • Monthly professional supervision—confidential and fully funded.
  • Access to our exclusive employee insurance programme (a first for NZ hospices!).
  • Free on-site parking every day.
  • On-site Aroha Eatery (with coffee discounts!) and our 2nd Edition Retail Shop.
